Why Gait Is Important to Foot Health

Gait describes the pattern used when walking, jogging, or running. Healthy gait mechanics help the feet absorb impact, transfer body weight, and maintain balance. Changes such as limping, shuffling, uneven steps, toe dragging, or difficulty pushing off can signal a foot, joint, muscle, or structural problem.

Because the body compensates for abnormal movement, stress may spread from the feet to the ankles, knees, or hips. A podiatrist can assess foot position, joint motion, stride, shoe wear, and areas of tenderness, and may use imaging when needed. Depending on the cause, care may include supportive footwear, custom orthotics, bracing, strengthening, or other treatment.

Persistent pain or changes in walking mechanics should be professionally evaluated.
