How to Tell if You Have an Ankle Sprain

Taped ankle and running shoes, representing support and recovery from an ankle sprain

An ankle sprain happens when ligaments supporting the ankle are stretched or torn, often after the ankle rolls or twists. Pain, swelling, bruising, stiffness, tenderness, and difficulty bearing weight are common. Sprains range from mild ligament stretching to complete tears.

Because a serious sprain can resemble a fracture, evaluation may include examination and imaging. Treatment often involves protection, rest, ice, compression, elevation, bracing, and rehabilitation. Severe or repeated sprains occasionally require surgery. Early treatment and exercises for strength, flexibility, and balance can help restore stability and reduce the risk of another injury.
