Why Daily Foot Care Is Essential for Diabetic Patients

Podiatric exam room at North Penn Podiatry, set up for a thorough evaluation

Diabetes may damage nerves and reduce circulation in the feet, making injuries harder to feel and slower to heal. Small cuts, blisters, pressure points, calluses, or areas of rubbing can therefore become serious if they are missed. Daily inspection, supportive properly fitting shoes, comfortable socks, and prompt attention to redness, swelling, drainage, or skin damage are important.

A podiatrist can examine skin, nails, circulation, sensation, and foot structure, professionally manage thick nails or calluses, and identify pressure areas before they develop into ulcers. Regular podiatric monitoring, together with good diabetes management, can reduce the risk of infection, tissue damage, and other complications.
