Understanding Sever's Disease in Growing Children

Family's bare feet lined up, representing healthy foot development in children

Sever's disease is a common source of heel pain in active children and adolescents. It develops when repeated stress irritates the growth plate at the back of the heel, particularly during periods of rapid growth. Running and jumping sports, tight calf muscles, flat feet, and high arches can increase stress.

Children may limp, report pain during activity, or have tenderness when the heel is squeezed. Activity modification, heel support, stretching, and appropriate footwear can help manage symptoms.

This article provides general information and is not a substitute for a professional medical diagnosis. Please contact our office to discuss your child's specific symptoms.
